Last week's speaker
Associate Professor Stephen Moratti from the University of Otago Gave a fascinating talk on his research and development of Gel.
The gel amusingly compared to the substance in 'Flubber' the 1997 film starring Robin Williams has potential uses in many fields.
The first commercial use will be in the medical field. the gel developed by Stephen can be used in surgeries, specifically sinus. The gel is used to block cavities which stops infection and scar tissue. This product will hopefully be going to market in February.
Stephen showed us some videos showing the properties of the developed gel. Emphasising the strength and durability, the gel was hit with a hammer and also dropped out of a helicopter!
More possible future uses could be in DNA plots and drug release but Stephen is sure there are endless possibilities and is urging people to come forward with other ideas for which it could be used and marketed.
Remember: It’s your responsibility to arrange a substitute if unable to fulfil your duty.
