  • Pres Sue welcomed all, members and gueststo a night with Murray at his Gallery in Moray Place.
  • A reminder that a fundraiser is planned for Wednesday the 8th November with the screening of the film "Murder on the Oreint Express". Funds will go to NRG and Rotoract clubs for their contribution to the Polio Plus campain.  Details later.
  • Ah-Lek organised the shift of books for the book sale from the Athenaeum to the old House of Travel shop at 342 George Street last Wednesday. It went well and some setting books up was carried out on Wednesday and Thursday.    Hopefully lots of you turned up to help with this fundraiser.
Next Week's
Speaker
Graham Crombie
In April 2013 Graham formed Innovatio as a vehicle to allow him to focus on consulting and governance assignments with a small number of key clients.

Since 1984 he has been involved in a wide range of assignments working in public practice chartered accountancy firms including Lawrence Anderson Buddle, Price Waterhouse and for the last 16 years as a partner in Polson Higgs.

He is currently working with a varied and interesting range of clients both as a governor and a consultant on a range of issues including organisational design, strategic and business planning and governance development.

To Graham Innovatio means a combination of renewal, progress and innovation. This is what he is looking to bring to the organisations he works with.'

Heads and Tails
Once again there was no H &Ts this week so you were all saved some 'coin'.

Last week's vocational speaker
& Rotarian = Murray Eskdale

Murray provided us witth his backgound and talked about how he 'procured' the space that the Mint Gallery ocupies. The wide range of artists who use his gallery for displays of their work is growing all the time. Sometimes they hire the space and others Murray sells on commission. Murray also of course uses this space to display his photography work which may you have been seen in various public spaces including Dunedin Airport.
We then went into his work room where he explained the processes he uses to meet his clients wishes regarding the mounting and framing of thoir artwork.
He can copy and laminate large artworks and photogrphs on his very large format equipment.
Murray is in the process of rebranding the Gallery to the Eskdale Gallery. Everyone thought that was a good move Murray. Thank you for the drinks before hand and during the Gallery event.
What an interesting and informative evening. As Dave H says we should have more of them.

There is a raft of pictures from  both the GAllery and across the road is 'down below'.

from ??????
As with the Sergeant's Session and Heads and Tails this segment of the evening was 'missing in action'
We'll blame Murray.

RYE - Rotary Youth Exchange

Dunedin Central Rotary Club has been approached to host an RYE student from Chile for the year of 2018.
Gary Williams runs the programme and will come to speak to our club on the 24th October and answer any questions and I have posted  a link for you to see more information.
Directors have approved the idea but all of those who have responded agree that we  need to have our host families in place before we commit.
There is an urgency for us to commit as the student ( female ) is arriving at the end of  January 2018.
Our club has not hosted a RYE student for a very long time and from other Rotarians comments, I believe it is a very worthwhile experience.
Rather than me target anyone directly I have included a link for you to find out more but I would like an indication of who might be keen to host her for a term/ a few weeks/ longer.
The current students are with families/ single people/ couples… they go to school and there are lots of activities planned for them, as a group, during the year.
We would need to have a councillor in place , as well. This person would be the ‘go-to’ person for the students and would generally keep a close eye on them. Please let me know if you would be prepared to be that person.

Lots to think about but please give it serious consideration…. a great experience form the sounds of it.
Kind Regards
Sue

The Annual Duck Race
The Annual Duck Race
This is a note sent to Claire from Dunedin East requesting some publicity for the Duck Race

"Hello Claire,

As you might already know, I am working with John Nelson from the Rotary Club of Dunedin East through my Red Cross role, to help organize the Duck Race.

It would really help if Rotarians who have school connections can encourage the schools to take part in the event. Maybe clubs can put it in their notices for the upcoming meetings  It has no cost at all!
All they have to do is decorate the duck we give them and just show up!

Attached is the sign up form for schools. For the corporate sign up forms please contact John Nelson.

Kind regards,
Sakhr"

Please note that if you think you got away without doing a duty last week - - TOO BAD. Because the BE has just 'slid' them back a week.  So there!!!!!
The one exception is that Rajesh is doing What's New in place of Peter N who complained bitterly at the Book sale book shifting that he was to do the Sergeant's Session AND What's New on the same night.
My apologies Peter, i thought you would not notice!!

Last week, at Rotary, all members received a raffle card with 20 tickets on it. Each ticket costs $2 and will be drawn on World Polio Day 24th October.
There will be three draws for the prizes of 2 designer cushions, a ‘Food for Humans' recipe book and car cleaning products.
For every $1 we raise the Bill Gates Foundation match it with $2. This is an easy way to raise money for the ‘End Polio Now’ project.
If you aren’t able to be at Rotary next week then your tickets will be posted to you.
It is vital we have all the money and sold tickets back by the 24th October for the draw.
Get behind this very worthwhile project .We may be able to raise the most money out of all the Dunedin Rotary clubs!
Bill Gates said in his speech at the 2017 Rotary convention. “The progress on polio (eradication) is a reminder of what people can accomplish when they are bold, determined, and willing to work together.”
Sue

AND NOTE as stated above the raffle card that you have been given (20 tickets at $2.00 ie $40 for the full card) will be met by Bill and Melinda Gates with a $2 for every $1 we raise. If very member sells their card - hopefully to friends and families, we will raise with the Gates contribution $4,200.00 approx.
