No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.
Aesop via Pres Sue
Sergeant's Session
Heather McL did a fantastic job of this on her first try. As Pres Sue said it was a traditional format that we should aspire to.
Club Notices
Pres Sue welcomed our guests Erin Ford and her parents Julie and Chris and the HoD Science at OGHS Dr Ian Phillips. Robyn Chirnside was also welcomed.
Graham informed the meeting that Jan C is back at home and recuperating after her back surgery.
Jenny Early has been in for a pre-op Wed 13. We wish you well for her op this week..
Andrew H gave us a run down on the Rotary Symposium he attended in Auckland. Thoroughly worthwhile and fantastic speakers. The 2018 Convention is in Toronto 23 to 27 June so - "let's just do it".
Ah-Lek Thanked those that helped with the Alzheimer s collection on Saturday and also those that helped with the transfer of books on Sunday to The Athenaeum and the children's books to Sue's garage for sorting to go to Vanuatu.
Pres Sue informed the members that the Board had approved a grant of $1,000.00 to the Casting for Recovery programme. This provides an opportunity for those suffering from breast cancer to learn and enjoy the sport of catch and release fly fishing. The upcoming retreat is full so our funds are being put to good use.
President Sue mentioned that Rotarian Lindsay Thorburn had died Friday 8th and he will be remembered for his dedication to the Shelterbox programme and the Caresbrook project that culminated in the wonderful gift to the Rotary Children's ward at Dunedin Hospital.
Please note there will be a Board meeting after this week's meeting. Reports please directors.
This week's Speaker
Pauline Blomfield
Pauline Blomfield loves dogs, but she also knows they can be dangerous - especially when children are involved. She believes educating children about how dogs behave - and what could cause them to bite - can cut the number of dog attacks. Her book, How to Keep Kids Safe With Dogs, hopes to do that. The book has a few simple things children can be taught to be safe around dogs, and teaches adults how to spot a stressed dog who could bite.
Pauline has owned and trained dogs for over forty years. She has been awarded a life membership for her work as an
obedience instructor and has been involved with canine
therapy in Rest Homes, Hospitals and Hospice. Pauline has trained a dog for search work and has consulted to the
Department of Conservation for the use of dogs to detect
endangered plant species. She has also written training
manuals for dog clubs and organisations and currently she is training a New Zealand Heading dog to work sheep.
Disturbed at the lack of understanding shown by children and adults when around dogs, Pauline realised the need for a fun book to help children understand how to act safely around
dogs. Armed with the belief that a little know-how can save a lot of heartache and her considerable canine experience,
Pauline wrote HOW TO KEEP KIDS SAFE WITH DOGS
along with her husband Alan who illustrated the book.
Pauline’s ongoing desire to learn about dogs continues as she flies to Auckland next month for a 3 day workshop with an
international animal biologist and trainer.
Heads and Tails
Beth did very well until she excluded the Bulletin Editor out of the contest (then the potential joy went right out of the occasion) to leave Andrew M as the default winner.
Yes the 2018 Rotary Convention is to be in Toronto on the 23rd to the 28th June 2018.
See what other clubs are doing, achieving and hear great speakers.
Yours truly has booked his and Jenny's hotel.
This Convention will be great experience
NOT to be missed.
Last week's speaker
Erin Ford
Last September Erin was selected to go to the Rotary National Science forum in Auckland and following that she was selected as District 9980 student (only 5 NZ students) to go to the Science Forum in Canberra. It was fantastic everything was organised for the students. They were all organised into study interest groups and attended a range of lectures and site visits.
Plant and animal study group visited organic farms, National Museum and the Science Museum. A sports evening was organised which was a lot of fun.
Two weeks went very fast and they made life-long friends and consequently it was very hard to leave.
Then to Melbourne Next Step Programme, the Walter + Eliza Institue of Medical Research and the CSL and the Univestity of Melbourne.
Erin applied to go to the London International Youth Science Forum and thought that there was no way she would be selected BUT was. what a thrill it was to have 3 weeks in London representing the Australian Forum. It was a 'free for all' in London, visits to The Imperial College, Beitside Hall, Oxford, Cambridge and wondering around the gardens. More life long friends.
Next year Erin hopes to go Massey to do veterinary science; or Auckland, Wellington or Otago University to do science but it rather depends on the quality of the halls of residence also.
Erin thanked the Rotary Club of Dunedin Central, Dr Phil and especially her parents for funding her trips.
PP and DG Elect Andrew H is on the 'run' to his (Our) conference to be held in Oamaru on the
26th to 28th April 2019.
Keep this date free for a fun
and informative weekend
THE 4 –WAY TEST
Of things we think, say or do:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
from Andrew M
Andrew has purchased a new oscilloscope - a 10th of the cost of his old one and 10 times more powerful. He then went on to provide a description that he hoped all us laymen/women could understand. Well in my opinion, Andrew - you failed.
