Shelter Box Auction
Ooops

Apologies to Robyn L as last week i reported that the Shelter Box auction wine was provided by Robyn C. It was provided by Robyn L. Thank you RL.

    Club Notices

  • President Sue welcomed our speaker, Hilary Bisset and Bishop Colin campbell.
  • The 14th November is our auction night.
  • IMPORTANT NOTICE - The Dunedin Club will only accept non-transferable cheques made out to it (ie the Dn Club). Non-transferable cheques made out to cash WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
  • Ah-Lek noted that the Regent Book Sale is to be held on Friday the 8th June to 12 noon on the 9th. At 12.01pm we will start boxing up the books and take them to the Atheneum basement. It should not take long, say 1.5 hours and after, all that feel the urge to eat will head for a café.
  • So far 26 Rotarians have registered for conference 2019. The temporary web site is up and running.
  • The 12 June is our ten pin bowling night and families are welconme - keep this date free for a fun night with a meal after at Cableways Tavern.
  • Andrew M asked that return your Rotary money boxes (filled of course) on the 26th June.
Next Week's Speaker
Tony Clear
Yes this is Tony caught at the Nanking wondering where to put these two sticks OR is he waving to someone.
Most of us are aware of Tony's contribution to the Dunedin landscape. He is a director of Clear Construction and provides licensed commercial construction services including project managment, trust managment and property management services to lenders, developers and individual real estate investors. Financial investors and partners in commercial and residential real estate development opportunities.
As one of Dunedin's 'movers and shakers' this should be an interesting talk.
One of Tony's other interests is cycling and no doubt we will also hear of his adventures on two wheels.

Sergeant's Session

As Beth S is still not well so Pres Sue
did 'her thing' and being closely related to the Royals undertook our knowledge of the recent nuptials.
Most survived 'sort of'. However the sergeant's plate had its reward.

Thought 4 the Week
Do not be afraid of being different today - just be afraid of being indifferent today.

LAST WEEK'S SPEAKER

Hilary Bisset - Rotarian
Hilary's grandfather emigrated from Scotland in 1849 and her dad went to South Otago High School and then went to Teachers Training College. Soon after he was sent to Canada to train as a pilot  to undertake surveillance of submarine activity.  Hilary read a letter she had just found that her Dad had written to Hilary's Mum.  it is of great signifiance to Hilary as it contained a record ofa  general nature but more importantly of one of his narrow escapes in very rough seas where he made several
attempts to land on the ship and finally got down only to be flipped off and into the turbulent sea. He and one of his crew were saved after hanging on to a mostly deflated raft but the other crew member was 'lost at sea'.
He met Hilary's mum and they got married during the war in the UK. Hilary was born in Balclutha and she can remember going to the beach and picking coal up by the bucket for use at home. Hilary is a Girl Guide girl and she also learnt to piano.
The screen was more important than us.
After Training College she went to Hawkes Bay where she had her first car a Mini Minor. Hilary was married for 20 yeras and has 3 childen, Simon, Paul and Melissa. All are very sports orientated.
The family had lots of holidays at Wanaka and Kaka Point. Her husband was a builder and they owed 200 acres The boys learnt crutching and all the other important farming 'bits'. They formed their own crutching group. Melissa is into speech competitions and won a Rotary Speech Competition some time ago. Masters netball and squash were her sporting interests. Paul was captain of the Otago rugby team when they won the Ranfurly Shield. Their Dad had also been in the team and had won the shield so it must run in the family.
Her son's farm has the dreaded mycoplasma bovis infection so is under some stress as they wait for MPI to 'do their thing'.
Melissa worked in Engalnd as a dental therapist but is now back in Wellington.
Hilary has had many trips to England to visit Melissa when she was there Hilary moved to Dunedin (Montecello Lane) but still works in Balclutha.

Heads & Tails
Hilary was back into action with Heads & Tails. Most fittingly Bishop Colin took home the wine.
What's New
Well, I had a What's New a couple of weeks ago but what has changed is that number two daughter Joanna has arrived from Palmerston North to look after our house, our dogs and do my job as Heaven Sent Pet Cremations manager role while Jenny and i are at the Rotary Convention and doing the Rockies and Alaska cruise thing after our Rotary 'festivities'.
