SERGEANT

Rajesh pulled out some exceptionally random questions as Quizmaster tonight. A fair bit of ventriloquism around the room as our pockets emptied and our trivial knowledge increased.

A single strand of spaghetti is not ‘lonely’ but a spaghetto.

The 1st item sold on ebay was in fact a broken laser pointer.

Liz S was the first to answer a question correctly, the British pound being the oldest currency to still trading.

David B admirably pronounced NZ’s longest place name Taumata whakatangi hangakoauau o tamatea turi pukakapiki maunga horo nuku pokai whenua kitanatahu...apparently all thanks to Kenny Everett (go figure!)

HEADS & TAILS

Editor lost out to the newbie. First meeting Rosie uses her Head to win the Wolf Blass Cab Sav, enjoy

Go into the world and do good."

WHAT'S NEW

In true Graham Spence style off the cuff we learnt, in a roundabout way ,about the new Spencer Pill spreadsheet rota. How Mr Spence has utilised his shoulder injury sling and rheumatoid arthritis sore hand to his advantage as many female nurses eagerly assist during his deathly pickups, always with the gracious thank you.

Daughter No.1: an optometrist at the right place!!

Daughter No.2: In Palmerston North eagerly searching for employment..if you know of any jobs going for a woman of many skills.

Daughter No.3: Right now on top of the world as she has tonight finished a seminar in Tauranga with Nigel Latta.

“Saint Jenny” was given sincere thanks for her patience tolerance, daily bed making and fetching skills.

ROTARY KNOW HOW

An outstanding day, great to see 5 of the Speakers were from our Club...would suggest our Club is successfully punching above its weight!!
Thank you to Tania Lowery, DG Elect and PDG Bruce Cowen for organising such a successful and informative weekend.

AH-LEK'S SERGEANT SESSION - as promised

AG Derek K: Heavily fined for many misdemeanors, reference to ‘a goat.’ Thanked for looking after Sir Graham Henry and his contribution to the smooth running of conference. To Be fair, his defence in making reference to “a King and a Knight” was a clever word play….however you had a senior moment and forgot your duty...pay up Mr King.

Adrian H: Thank you for your Sponsorship, well placed table... got a few leads please add to the money pot.

The Allens & Rajesh T: Fined...because they were overseas.

Stephen G: Reference to a legless man?? Extend your arm to your pockets. Sincere thanks for your sponsorship

Andrew H: (from and Editor’s point of view) one hard working man with not enough hours in the day, thanking and acknowledging the amazing amount of work and sheer contribution from one of our own...the DG. If only his financial contribution to the Sergeant’ session could compare to his hours!!!

David B: Thank you for your contribution as a Speaker, fined for happily volunteering Alana to help out the Committee...not always with permission. (On a personal note. thank you Alana for your help over the weekend, decorating and your much needed hugs...Alison Tay gets a thank you here too...great destressing hugs!!)

Grant B: Couldn’t be there, thanks for great money management. Hint of a small profit. Fined cos its the first time in a while.

Bob S: No fine..brought Rosemary, cherished her status within Rotary, her presence...just needed, thank you.

Louise P: Fined for first year in and dragging her husband to conference, however an excellent decision, fitted right in. Thank you for your contribution to the decorating committee.

Graham S: While can be fined for many things a genuine thank you for his guidance, wisdom and first in for sponsorship.

Eleanor A: Fined for being mentioned far too many times in Speakers’ presentations!! Fantastic job hunting out speakers.

Sue M: A hard task putting together the Remembrance Reflection. Delivered with dignity and class.

Robyn L: Thank you for organising the band and the catering. To the decorating committee...you made an incredible venue shine with all the little touches. A huge thank you to Nicole B, Sarah P, Louise P, Robyn C, Alison Tay, Alana Black and Anna Harcus.

Last but definitely not least, President David: It’s a tough year to be President when “DG is in the house”  and Conference takes precedent...Thank you for your support. We are now here to get projects up and running.

NEXT WEEK'S SPEAKER

REMAYA M CAMPBELL

Remaya is pursuing a Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago. She came to Dunedin from Los Angeles and is a graduate of the University of Southern California. She is passionate about advocacy and social justice, drawing personal inspiration from the continued struggles of African-Americans, immigrants, and other disadvantaged groups throughout the United States. She began her academic interest in peace and conflict after a research trip to Northern Ireland during which she met with convicted Catholic and Protestant former paramilitary members. She believes with great conviction that peace is neither impractical nor impossible, but rather is something that is built through commitment humanitarian ideals of safety, security, and respect for all persons.

She is absolutely thrilled to fulfill her lifelong dream of visiting New Zealand and has a long list of things she like to do while she's here including visiting Fiordland, exploring Maori culture, seeing the yellow-eyed penguins, completing a full ''Lord of the Rings' location tour, and horseback riding. She loves working with kids and actively seeks opportunities to engage young students about peace and conflict in their society and the wider world. Remaya would like to express her sincerest gratitude to District 9980 and Dunedin South for hosting and hopes to actively contribute to Rotary's wonderful community service efforts in the region.

THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER

JANE LUDEMANN

I have tried since Tuesday evening to reflect and write on Jane’s speech. In all honesty I have gone through every gamut of emotion coming up empty handed. I have half an opening sentence, bit parts in the middle and what I hope is a respectful and sincere finish. Yes the photo is confronting after her revelations of the stories behind it, these women are all of an age of people we know. I am rarely stuck for words especially writing. I am aware the bulletin needs to go out, I am however, not going to pen a half hearted piece, I wish to give Jane the justice her story deserves. Please accept my apologies re the missing Speaker’s write up... I will send it out separately, meanwhile hug the ones you love...now, Jane is counting the hours she has left to do so at the age of 34.
