Last Weeks Speaker

Rob Teiger (photographed above) from Connect South, spoke with us last week about 'Men's Support House' which is a proposed project with supporting partners, A3k, Catholic Social Services, Night Shelter and Connect South all involved. The project seeks to help the perpetrators of domestic abuse find their way in life after the breakdown caused by their actions. Why should the family have to move when the perpetrator can be re-located and rehabilitated? Many families do not want to prosecute the perpetrator but do need them to be away from the family or victims for some period of time at a safe place.

Before moving to NZ Rob lived in Jura, an island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Jura is a remote island which has two ferries to the mainland. Rob set up a community shop there.

In Dunedin, Rob now brings his experience to Connect South who's main aim is to strengthen communities. They offer events and services in the community with funding from DCC, Lotteries and COGS. Organisations helped by Connect South include Artsenta, Farmers Market, VICTA and OAR. The help includes administration, answering phone calls and doing forms.

Rob gave an interesting talk and obviously thinks 'outside the box' to try and find solutions to problems in the community.

Rotary Friendship Exchange to D2400 Sweden

Rotarians and their Partners are invited to register their interest in participating in a Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) visit to District 2400 in Sweden  starting & finishing in Sweden on the 14th and 28th of August 2017.  There are just 2 or 3 places still available.
This will be the reciprocal visit from our District following a very successful visit from them, which has just taken place this February.  A team of 6 couple visited the Rotary Clubs of Timaru, Dunedin South, Invercargill Sunrise, Fiordland, Queenstown and Wanaka.
This invitation is not limited to members of these clubs, who hosted or participated in the visit.

D2400 is situated in the southern part of Sweden and stretches from the North Sea coast on the west side of the country to the Baltic Sea on the east side and includes four provinces – Skåne, Blekinge, Småland and Halland. The area of D 2400 comprises all kinds of nature except from high mountain terrain. For instance you can find archipelagos, beaches, forests, agricultural areas and wetlands. Sweden has a long history and parts of their region have for example belonged to Denmark so they have a very rich and diverse culture. Entrepreneurship is on a high level all over the region. Here the European Union is a practical reality and development a tangible result of cooperation between society, business and higher education.

In Skåne the town of Malmö is linked to Denmark and the Danish Capital Copenhagen by the impressive Öresund Bridge which was opened for traffic in 2000.

The city of Karlskrona in Blekinge has the status of Unesco World Heritage because of the best preserved Navy Base in the world from the 17th century. The base is still in active operation.

In Småland they have the Kingdom of Crystal with the well known glassworks of Orrefors and Kosta. IKEA, the worldwide furniture company has its origin in Älmhult. Carl von Linné, the famous botanist and scientist, was born in this region.

Halland is an area where summer tourism is important and it has some of the best beaches in Sweden.

The Rotary Friendship Exchange programme is an activity of Rotary International under which Rotarians and their families can carry out reciprocal visits with the purpose of advancing international understanding, goodwill and peace through people to people contact across national boundaries.

This visit is open to all Rotarians and their Partners from all Clubs in our District.
