Shelter Box Auction
Heather on her recent journey to the land of scratched cricket balls came back with a 'hand bag' which was acquired by Graham in his anticipation of the number of pills he may have to travel with mid-year.
Thank you Heather and thanks (I think) Andrew H who undertook the auction

Peter N produced a non-alcoholic grape juice just in case one of our speakers won. Good thinking Peter.

The winner was Priyanka.

David H did a great job fining members for getting things correct and getting things wrong.
Thank you Dave.
There was no What's New this week

Well, there was really.

I was awarded a PHF Sapphire pin for my services to the club.
Not sure why as there are many others who have done just as much and more in many cases. An important lesson that I learnt very early in my journey with Rotary was never say 'no' if you are asked to do something. That attitude has stood me well and hopefully has benefitted the Rotary Clubs of which I have been proud to have been a member.
A very big thank the Club for this award and hope in the future I can continue to be of value to the Club and the community

Last week's speakers
Both Lucy and Priyanka presented wonderful impassioned speeches incorporating the four principles of the four way test;
Pieter explained that the speeches must be more than 5 minutes and no more than 6 minutes. The winner would contest that area finals here on the 10th April and the winner would be expected to present their speech at the District Conference on the 5th and 6th May here in Dunedin.

Lucy spoke first and her speech was based on the advances in the IT sector and how we are all unwittingly reliquising our privacy. Our data is is the most important and 'cookies' are left behind oon our computers etc. he minutiae of our lives is collected on all 'smart' phones etc.
Smart phones probably know more about us than our friends. We need to take care of our data.
Four robots are 'employed' in a factory in Japan on night shift and they don't complain or demand equal pay.
Priyanka was 'second up' and spoke of how the environment, ability to imagine and thought processes distingish us from other animals.  The application of the 'Four Way Test' is what makes us special.
She mentioned our ability to do certaiin things such as atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and we are the only species to land on the moon, are only two examples of what we can do that damage our environment. But by 2050 it is estimsted thata 50% of all species of plants will be extinct. The white rhino is almost there now. there is over 13 million tons of rubbish in th oceans. 130 million hectares of rain forrest have been lost.
Technology has advanced but our brains have not kept pace. Technology has tremendous problems but it can be of tremendous advantage. We must change - that is the truth.

Sonia Van de Klundert as chief judge offers tips and congratulations to our two contestants and gives the judges decision that Lucy was the successful one.
Sonia was assisted in this task by fellow jugdes Pieter vd K and Sandy J

We’re at a pivotal moment in history for ending polio

151112_stanulaBy Jean Stanula

When I was a kid, it seemed like “making a difference” was easy. I can recall asking for pledges for Jump Rope for Heart to raise money for the American Heart Association, and carrying a fish food jar converted into a donation canister around the neighborhood to collect nickels to help the American Cancer Society find a cure. I had a natural desire to give to others.

I’ve been able to nurture that desire through my work at Rotary, where I’ve continued to find motivation to give back to others. In 2013, I ran the Chicago Marathon to raise money for the American Red Cross and mobilized friends from around the world to support me.

Now, I’m ready to contribute to the fight to end polio. We are closer to finishing this fight than ever, much closer than we were the day I began working at Rotary more than 10 years ago. And that is exciting. I work very closely with volunteer leaders and often hear inspiring stories about their work with our organization. I will be proud to ride alongside Rotary members, colleagues, and other like-minded people dedicated to this worthy cause.

We are at a pivotal moment in history, and I am thrilled to be a part of it. As an athlete, the best way I can give back is through an event like El Tour de Tucson, joining hundreds of other cyclists in showing the world that nothing can stop a movement like ours.

Jean Stanula is a global events supervisor for Rotary International. She is one of several Rotary staff members who will join General Secretary John Hewko in biking El Tour de Tucson in Arizona to raise money for polio eradication. Read posts from other team members and learn how you can support the team.

Rotary districts could earn an appearance on stage at the Rotary International Convention in Seoul by contributing district designated funds to support the Miles to End Polio team. Find out more.

Want to join the effort? Take part in the Indoor Ride to End Polio by riding a stationary bike at your local gym or at home anytime from 14 to 21 November.

As President Sue proclaimed - awarding a
PHF Sapphire pin is a real occasion
And it was when President Sue invited yours truly up to the 'Top Table'.
AND yours truly obeyed as is required and yours truly repeats here, what she said, as instructed. Hopefully yours truly does not run out of paper in the effort to obey.

Just where did she get all that stuff about him???
He is being 'told off' for the odd stray helpful comment
The official 'pinning'.
I’d like to give everyone a little background on this wonderful Rotarian.
Graham trained as an architect and was involved in a number of high profile public buildings throughout New Zealand, the most notable as architect in charge of Parliament Buildings and as Project Architect for the construction of the Executive Building (the Beehive). He was awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal for services to the Crown.

In the latter years of his career he managed the Buildings and Property offices of Works Consultancy in the Napier and Dunedin offices and then as a member of the architectural team at Salmond Anderson Architects.

In his ‘retirement’ he is a director of Heaven Sent Pet Cremations (2006) Ltd and Graham Spence Architectural Consultancy, Dunedin.

Graham became involved in the Hawksbury Community Living Trust in 1988/89 and he is currently the longest serving Trust member.

He, and his wife Jenny, as many parents do, was fully involved in the education of their daughters - holding positions of President of the Upper Hutt Kindergarten Association through to the Wellington Education Board’s representative on the Heretaunga College Board of Governors.  He was instrumental in the establishment of the Art Deco Trust in Napier in 1985 in which he was endowed with a Life Membership.

He is of course a much loved member of our Rotary Club of Dunedin Central and what a member he is….
He has served as President twice: once in the 1992/1993 year and once in the 2009/2010 year (a very good year when I actually joined the club).
He has been, in the past, and is currently our club’s bulletin editor. He does an excellent job making the bulletin one of the best in the District. His funny quips and cartoons make for interesting reading… and he now has the roster all sorted!
Graham has served on most committees during his time in the club and has been a director off and on since he joined in 1989… 29 years ago.
During my term as President, Graham has been the welfare officer for the club (along with his wife, Jenny). He takes the time to support our club members in need, be it sickness, bereavement or just to give sage advice. He is a very sincere and caring person. A phone call from Graham means members know they are being thought of and that they are part of the Rotary family.
Graham is a fantastic supporter of our annual auction and has given us all many laughs when he and Jenny bid against each other without the other realising their opposition. He is also an avid bidder at our club meeting auctions… especially if it is whiskey being auctioned.
He became well known for his promotion of the Rotary Christmas puddings and I know many of us probably still have some in our pantries.
He is a reliable and regular participant in our street collections and always puts his hand up for any club fundraising projects. Have a project … Graham is there in any weather and for any job.
He willingly and effectively participates in any Area or District projects, as well, representing our club with grace and vigour.
Graham and Jenny will attend the International Rotary Convention in Toronto in June where Helen Clark a former NZ Prime minister will be one of the keynote speakers. I’m sure we will all enjoy hearing about this adventure on their return.

Graham was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship for his service to the community and his club, a few years ago and now it gives me great pleasure to award him a sapphire Paul Harris Award to recognise his outstanding contribution to our club and Rotary in general.
Please extend your congratulations to our new Paul Harris sapphire recipient.
The BE does also apologise to President Sue and all members present for getting into a converstaion with the reception personnel - anyway i am sure you will all agree its his best side.
Please retain the above information because you just never know when you will be quizzed on its contents.
