Last Week's Guest Speakers

Last week we had visiting members from Rotaract, three of whom participated in a presentation about their recent project in Thailand and Cambodia, 'Project Starfish' with Dunedin Central Rotarian David Black. Pictured above are from the left, Harry, Lauren, James and David.

First stop for the trip was the Rescue Mission for Children. This organisation runs the Akha Academy in Mae Suai, Northern Thailand. The Akha Academy provides a safe home and access to local primary and secondary schooling for children at high risk from human trafficking, particularly those from the Akha Hill Tribe in Thailand and Myanmar.

The Starfish team helped out in many areas here including the relocation and plantation of guava plants, medical and dental check ups, general grounds clear up, water culture system and electrical work. The group were there for three weeks and got on great together. They were occupied with many different projects and it was hard labour for a lot of this time! They also had rewarding time with the children playing sports, games and music etc. They had a sad goodbye from the Rescue Mission and headed to Cambodia.

They were now able to do some sight seeing in between meeting with several NGOs including NVader, APLE, Child Helpline, Hagar and CPCR.

The team gave a fantastic and inspirational presentation. It really showed us what can be done!

Tuesday's Speaker, Jeremy Scott

Jeremy wasn’t only born with a huge hole in his heart, but with adventure and a love of the great outdoors pulsing through his veins. His insatiable hunger to explore more of the world inspired Jeremy to move to London which he used as a base to travel extensively throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.

Despite seeing more of the world that most people could ever dream of, he felt there was still more to explore and on the 5th October 2011, he set off for what turned out to be a 2 1/2 year 51,916km solo bike ride around the globe.

At the completion of that life changing journey, Jeremy wrote his first book “The Long Road From A Broken Heart” and is now dedicating his life to inspire others.

During his epic ride and beyond, Jeremy raised over $30,000 for the New Zealand, Australian and British Heart Foundations and continues to support these charities through speaking engagements and book sales.

In March 2016 Jeremy was awarded the Australian Heart Foundation 'Heart Hero' Award.

Remember: It’s your responsibility to arrange a substitute if unable to fulfil your duty.
