Sergeant's Session
The issue we must always remind ourselves of "never let President sue loose doing the Sergeant's duty.
WE ALL PAID DEARLY FOR IT.
What's New
by Don A
Don A gave a brief history of important developments in Dunedin such as the Stadium, Chinese Garden and now the suggested development of Otago Harbour and hoped that the City and Council 'got right in behind' it.

Club Notices

  • President Sue welcomed Peter Chin our speaker and Robyn Lennon (who is to be inducted later in the evening).
  • President Sue informed the meeting that Sam Mulholland had resigned from the club. This was accepted with regret. Sam joined our club in October 1984.
  • Murder on the Orient Express was enjoyed by all who were able to attend. Many thanks to Derek for organising this fundraiser. See the picture below.
  • Unfortunately we were not able to get two members to act as hosts for the RYE student so President Sue had no alterative but to inform District of this.
  • This coming meeting night is our AUCTION NIGHT our major fundraiser so we can meet our contribution to the Foundation. Come prepared in all respects.
  • Bob S circulated Derek's report for all to have a read before it presentation (and hopefully accepted) at our 28 November meeting.
Our Rotary Club donated $1,000 towards the Casting For Recovery Weekend in Wanaka. Looks like we helped these women revitalise and re-energise after breast cancer surgery.
(It was a huge success with each and every woman having a fantastic time.  Most of the women caught or at least hooked a fish despite the rain!! and many new friendships were made.)

Last Week's speaker
Peter Chin
Andrew M introducted Peter with a little of his history. Peter attended OBHS and went to the UofO where he gained a law degree. He was a founding memebr of Webb Farry and served two terms a mayor of Dunedin. He chaired the Chinese Garden Trust. The GOvernment appointed him to the Constitution Panel and for his contribution to all of this activity he received the CNZOM. Peter has participated in the cities theatre and opera.
Peter spoke on the Dunedin and Shanghi relationship and stated that he not offen had such a captive audience. Dunedin has four sister cities; Portsmouth, Edinburgh, Otaru and lastly Shanghi. All of these had different reasons for the relationship however Shanghi is the most valuable to Dunedin.
Richard Walls started the ball rolling back in 1992 with respect to developing Siter City rlationships.Dunedin's budget for SCR is $60,000.00 which is pocket change for most other cities.
The Shanghui SC office take the relationship very seriously and monitor what is happening by reading the ODT and other Dunedin publications.During Suki's 9 year tenure as mayor there was basically no action related to Shanghi as she had strong feelings regarding China's track record on abuses of personal freedom etc. She sent MAurice Prendagast and Elizabeth Hanan in her place and this is not good enough as the Chiniese value the status of Mayor as threat such visits accordingly. Elizabeth Wilson from Columba College was in a group send over and she did very well by establishing close educational ties with colleges in Shanghi.
The relationship with Shanghi in particular extends to the Otago Museum, in 2011 there was a Maori group and these connections have extended to staff exchanges.
Next year the Chinese garden will have been open for 10 years and it is extremely important as our garden is the sister garden to that in Shanghi. We are both a city of Literature which is another important connection.
The valus of our siter city relaationship with Shanghi cannot be over estimated.
What a great crowd at the Polio Plus fundraiser.
Thank you Derek for organising.
President Sue 'doing the honours' and inducting
Robyn Lennon.
Robyn 's classification is Financal Administration.
Her mentor is to be Beth S and
she will be on the Youth Committee.

Robyn we know that you will enjoy your involvement with our club.
