CLUB DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR
Karen P has asked that we advertise this seminar in the bulletin so here it goes.

Please find attached an invitation to our Club Development Seminar to be held on Sunday August 28th 2018.

OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE EVERY CLUB'S PRESIDENT, PRESIDENT ELECT AND NOMINEE plus the person responsible for CLUB MEMBERSHIP and DEVELOPMENT as a minimum.

We are bringing MARK HUDDELSTONE the author of "CREATURES of HABIT" (a book about the membership issues facing Rotary Club's) from the Rotary Club of Seaford, in Adelaide. He is very much worth listening to!

Club Notices

  • President Sue was away and had PE David step into her shoes (it was difficult for him and his feet are suffering for it) for the evening.  He welcomed the speaker Mark Bredenbeck, Andrea Lambie and Toni Marr to the meeting.
  •
  • Reminder to all those who are going to the conference  on the 5th and 6th May your registrations should be in now.         Robyn C is co-ordinating attendees etc. and a 'quick' meeting was held at the end of evening to decide on our attire for the conference.                                         Its not too late to join the festivities.
  •
  • PE Dave mentioned that it was Peter Sinclair's last night as he swans off to slightly warmer pastures in the UK for the next 6 months or so.
  •
  • PE Dave obviously enjoyed the Oamaru trip and declaired it a great success.
  •
  • Change Over is scheduled for the 3rd July. Bit of a bugger - i will miss it as i will be in Canada baskin in the after glo euphoria of the RI Conference.

LAST WEEK'S SPEAKER

Mark Bredenbeck

East Otago Fire Risk Management Officer
Mark has worked iin the Police, Army and the Fire Service before his current roll as a fire risk management officer and is commissioned to undertake coronial and crimiinal investigations.  As a police officer he has worked in the UK before coming to NZ where he 'ended up' in the CIB.
He moved back to NZ 10years ago and his wife is now a teacher as Taieri College.
The current structure of fire brigade service in NZ is changing to include all the services, ie fire and ambulance. As you will see on TV most of the serious accidents involve the Fire Brigade.
Safety of the home is of prime importance as once a fire starts it does generally spread extremely quickly. Matches, candles and heaters are the main causes. Particularly where heaters are positioned too close to flammable materials. Working smoke alarms are MOST important. It will in most cases be the smoke that kills.  Anaother imp, ortant thing is to have a escape route plan and ensure that all occupants are aware of the exits.
Learn how to cook - BUT don't leave particularly frying pans on the stove unatended. AND do not throw water on burning fry pan.  Clean stoves, sweep chimneys and clean drier filter and smoke alarms.
Avoid second hand electrical goods unless they are checked by an electrician.
He can generally locate the point of origin of a fire after a bit of investigation. Shutting door will generally stop fire travel.
Mark is also a writer of crime fiction of some note.
THE BUS TOUR
Well it was all go - what a weekend it was.
We set off just after 9.30am on last Saturday in our mini bus and 6 cars for a weekend of 'looking and eating'. Heather has made sure that we did not have any spare time AND we did not go hungry. We arrived at the Mill House for morning tea provided by the Hamden School PTA. Ken and Vikki Lawsono were there to help us eat our way through the assembled plate gathering.
Teschmakers then the Maheno Tavern for fish and chips (and the odd drink) After lunch to Kukiheka homestead followed by Newlands and Radical Dog biscuits and tart cherries. Rod Tem[ero saw us all amased at the work (and cost) in having a replica car built, say a million approximately. a 'quick' trip to the Brewery pub to keep up our hydration levels before booking into the Northstar Motels so we could prepare for our evening meal at Riverstone. Those in the bus were fortunate that we have a bus driver named Mr Tay as we were able to continue to hydrate aporpriately.
The beds at the motel were either superb or we were sll pretty tired because we alll had a great night's sleep.
More food in the morning to get us to the next feed. On the way we HAD to stop at Style 358 a ladies fashion shop. The less said the better.
Then after a visit to the Oamaru market lunch at the Star & Garter. and at approximately 2pm set off for home.
What a great Rotary tripMany thanks to Heather for organising it and Ah-Lek for chauffeuring us.  Some 'telling' pictures later iin bulletin.

Cyclones Keni and Keta
Rotary was the only NGO to send supplies on first shipment to island of Kadavu, which took a direct hit from Cyclone Keni.

This in addition to distribution following Cyclone Gita Samoa and Tonga.

Best wishes
Bonnie (Director RNZWCS)

Sergeant's Session

Robyn L was not able to do her duty so had Ah_lek fill-in for her and he did his best to fleece us of what spare we had in our pockets.
Robyn C gave a run-down on their current excitment - Son Tim is in Vietnam on a school trip and is making the most of cheap suit making to get his dark grey suit made for his formal. Their 19year old has just got an apprentiship at Deiloits.
Then went on to show us the dress-up 'costume' for the Conference.
Great stuff Robyn.
