Well!!  it is the Kaikorai Stream
The estuary is calling
Hello DC Rotary,

Well the estary called and only the young, enthusiastic and those filled with vitality turned up. Many thanks to those that did; Ah-Lek and Stephie and Neville and Amelia.
Good progress was made with limited human resouces. This is a long term project so there will be many opportunities for you all to get your 'feet wet'.
The 17th Feb is another suggested date for a follow up visit.
Shelter Box auction
Two wonderful blocks of duty free chocolate from Sandy Jefferies were auction by Andrew H for the shelter box funds and the lucky winner was Andrew M.    I must have missed where he shared them out.

Sergeant's Session

Yes there is Neville 'hogging the line-light' as though last week was not enough.
AND we were priviledged to have Particia sing to us.
Next to Santa she was the highlight of the evening. Thank you Patricia.

Club Notices

  • As this is our first formal meeting - Welcome back everyone. We hope that you had a restful, wonderful, dry, rainy, sunny, busy and familiy filled holiday and that you are all 'primed' and ready' for a great 2018 Rotary year.
  • Once again our Christmas party was a great success. AND as far as the BE knows everybody got home free of speeding/alcohol driving offences.
  • Further to last week's bulletin pics there is some more photographic evidence of the Christmas party below.
  • Details of the Jumbo Tennis are below. Team members still required. Speak to Ah-Lek.      See details below
  • Remember that Ah-Lek mentioned last year that there is to be another clean-up at the landfil site probably Feb 17th this year. See details below.
  • Book Sale 'left-overs'. We need to clear the shop in the not to distant future so energetic strong volunteers needed.  Ah-Lek will update us soon.
  • Andrew H mentioned that the Clubrunner programme not only provides the base for the bulletin but also has many very valuable aps which can make our Rotary lives much more rewarding.
  • The 'committed' few had a very enjoyable dinner at the Nanking last week.  Arranging the circular tables took sometime and in the end the waitress thought that it was not easy to serve (or economic) to serve plates 'built' for 6 to a talbe of 3 or 4. Oh well, the table went back to the way they were.
WHAT WONDERFUL WELL DESERVED NEWS
we don't get this sort of good news often so I leave it here for everybody to 'bath' in the glory of one of our past member's achievements.
Yes - the view is so unforgettable, Warawick raising funds, not only for or club but for many Rotary Clubs and other worthy charities.

MR ALFRED WARWICK GRIMMER QSM

For services as a charity auctioneer and to the community

Mr Warwick Grimmer has helped organisations throughout the Otago region raise funds in the roles of charity auctioneer and Master of Ceremonies for more than 35 years.

In these roles Mr Grimmer has often travelled long distances throughout the region to fundraise at events for such varied organisations as the Halberg Disability Sport Foundations, Regent Theatre Trust, Otago Community Hospice, Women’s Refuge, Otago Access Radio Society, Adult Literacy, and the Otago Rugby Union among many others. He has performed the roles of auctioneer and MC on a voluntary basis, refusing payment for his services, expenses and travel costs. Within the wider community he has been a founding member of the Rotary Club of Dunedin Central since 1980. He has been involved with Rhododendrons for Dunedin Trust as founding Chairman since 2000 and has helped oversee the planting of approximately 20,000 plants around the greater Dunedin area. Mr Grimmer became a Fellow of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand in 2004 and was a member of the Otago Executive of REINZ from 1980 to 2005, having been involved with REINZ since 1976.

Warwick you have been showered with congratulations and best wishes from all but may we as the Dunedin Central Rotary Club add our very best bestest congratulations and best wishes.

May you, Helen and your families all enjoy what is rightfully yours.

BBQ at Dave & Jan Macleod's

Food about 6.30pm.
BYO drinks (and brollies/parasols).

Dave promises that there will be no pole dancers.

 15th February 2018 Jumbo Tennis

Jumbo Tennis has become one of Dunedin's premier fundraising activities. It's a day out of the office or work environment where you play tennis with racquets more than a metre long. Each team consists of two or four people and we play throughout the day - food and drinks are provided.

This is an excellent team building day for your staff, and the best thing is, all of the proceeds go to charity. The event is organised by the Rotary Club of Dunedin Central and NRG Dunedin with the proceeds going to the Brain Injury Association, The Disabled Citizens Society (Cargill Enterprises) and the Dunedin Night Shelter.

We hope you are able to join us for another great day of team building, fun and fundraising.

Jumbo Tennis will be held on Thursday 15 February 2018.
Event starts at 1.30pm at the Edgar Sports Centre
Table tennis rules prevail.
Arrive at the Edgar Centre at 1.30 for a 2pm start.
Februry the 15th

Registration is $500.00 per team of four or $350.00 per team of two. This covers your team's registration fees plus food and drinks.

Look at these two 'sharp' people.
Its getting serious - their in there formal dress.
As everyone is saying, enjoy.
We record the death of Trevor Buchanan and send our condolances to Trevor's wife, Pam, and their families.
Trevor worked for the DCC as the man in charge of all aspects of water and wastewater. He joined our club as a Charter member with the classification of Public Health Engiineering. He transfered to the Milton Club when he and Pam moved to Hawea. He was Secretary in our Club from 1984 to 1986 and was President in the 1989/1990 year after serving on most of the club's committees.
We have Bob Smith to thank for this photo which the BE has cropped from the photo he sent me. The original picture is below and shows what was called a Fireside meeting.

A Fireside Committee meetings where the the various  committees proposed activities and developed their prograames.
Each committee would meet at the director's home or alternate between committee member homes.  They tended to be informal and free 'roaming' discussions where worthwhile plans and projects were hatched.

The other members in the picture are on the left Bruce Stringer (one of the project team along with Warwick Grimmer and David Humphery) who organised the Tie Auction in 1991 that raised approx $52,000.00 at a black tie night held in the Glenroy Auditorium. After the Club donated funds to the Cancer Society the balance is held in our Trust account earning interest for use for other Club projects. Bruce was very active in the Arthritis Society and was a great advocate for the retention of the Physo Pool.   Bruce's classification was Freight Commercial.
John Moore another Charter member is on the right. His classification was 'Textile Manufacturing'. he was Hon Tresurer 1981/82 and 1992/94, secretary in 1982/83 diector of the Youth Committee in the 1986/87 year.
Peter and Sarah getting some delight out of Penny receiving her gift. Did thye know what it was??
Bob's a horny old man.
The Green Party were at our table on the right and the Act Party was represented on the centre table.
I'm pretty sure Santa is sitting down!!
Another general shot of the festivities.
Bob has a very firm hold on his horns and Peter is expectant.
Much happiness here with the Turkish Delight.
Peter and Sarah are not sure about this. Penny is 'egging' Peter on to open it.
Bob's dog biscuits are of no interest to the ladies.
I think that is an old copy of Playboy that Don has got.
That's better than the bag of dog buscuits that Bob has.
Don's had enough, he's off - scratching his bum.
Keith looks very pleased with the can of Coke he got.
Santa having trouble reaching deep down into 'her' bag for Eleanor.
Bugger. Are you taking a picture of me??
"Now Sue if you use it this way you might be able to also sing".
