Green Legacy

Last meeting we had Allan, Mick and Lee (all pictured above) talk to us about Green Legacy. This is a project involving the people of Hiroshima sending seeds of peace to the world. The Ginko tree survived the dinosaur age and the Hiroshima bomb. It is now a symbol of peace which is being sent internationally as part of the Green Legacy. They are looking for Dunedin to be the first place in New Zealand to get a Ginko tree and are looking to secure links with Dunedin Rotary for this long term project. it can take ten years to grow a tree to plant here.

Last Weeks Speaker

Last week we had Barbara Anderson as our guest speaker. Barbara is a physiotherapist and has been running Caversham Physiotherapy for 25 years where they do Physio, Pilates and Massage.

The main focus of the talk though was about the Dunedin Physio Pool. Barbara has been a major advocate for the survival of the pool after it has been threatened with closure after funds being cut. She passionately emphasised to us the need for the pool here including stories of her own personal recovery after two accidents and many others including people in cardiac re-hab, pre hab (physio before an op) and people trying to avoid surgery. The pool is also used by the special olympic squad, Muslim women (private swimming sessions) and pregnant women.

Barbara organised a pool fundraiser dinner which alone raised $29,000 for the cause.

For all her good work for the pool, Barbara was recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow at the meeting last week.

Here is our President awarding the Fellowship to Barbara.

Barbara has sent a message of thanks to the club:

'That was such a wonderful surprise. I feel so humbled by the special honour bestowed on me last night. You went to so much trouble and it was so nice of you to do all that for me.  I so appreciate your thinking of me and putting me forward for such a prestigious award. I was thrilled to be able to share my beautiful badge today with my patients up at Mercy, and am wearing the medal all day too (gently under my top!). Thanks again – just a very special night and experience and thanks again – so appreciated'

Tuesday's Speaker

This week Beth Stitely will be giving her new member talk. This will be her second talk at the club as she spoke to us last August about the Servants Health Centre.
