Jean gave a history starting with her GRandfather in the 1800s who was one of the first to have to pay a poll tax. He earned $100 for the years work.In the earlyn 1900s had a fish and chip shop oposite Knox Church.At 19 he was ready for marriage and was sent pictures for eligible girls froom China. He had to support his choosen one for 2 years (as a sort of engagement)
Jean can remember in the shop 1/6 (one shilling and sixpence -= 15 cents) and 3d ( 3d or 3pennys or 'thrippence' = 2cents) for a dozen oysters. They usedto kill 30 chooks and Jean would have to plunge them in boiling water and pluck them.
Jean was at high school when Patricia P taught there
in 1969 the Fish & Chip business morphed into August Moon Restaruant where 70 hour weeks were the norn.
Jean is fluent in Cantonese helped in future job offers.
She met David in 1976 na dcame to Dunedin to study pharmacy and she and David married in 1979 aafter he graduated. They have two daughter and one son who is in Melbourne. in 198 the restaruant was sold by her parents and Jean had a job at Otago Polytechnic, 9am till 2pm and was also undertaking interpretation for driver licence applicants.
Jean was teaching for 17 years.
In 1987 David and Jean purchased a partnership inNaughton's Pharmacy. After many years working they took a year off and travelled for a year. 9 months in Europe and then 3 months in Canada. One of the highlights was walking where Jesus walked in Israel. A week after they attended church in Jerusalem the church was bombed.
One year ago they travelled to India with Rajehsh and the group and would really love to serve on the Mercy Ship which they hoped to do soon.
