This seminar day was originally called District Assembly, then it became Showcase but times have changed and the new name really gives the intention front billing. Originally Office Holders were the intended audience but now we all need the backgound to our organisation.
And in learning from others we have fun and get to meet many other Rotarians not in our own Club. Its to be held at LPHS and a registation list is still to come.
Its free and lunch is included.

Next Week's Speaker
Tony Allison with a very
familiar backdrop

It takes a special kind of chief executive to want to parade up and down George St dressed in a bright blue morphsuit, promoting his business and engaging with customers.

But then, as Tony Allison, boss of Dunedin-based Night 'n Day Foodstore Ltd says, he's ''not your standard CEO''.

The story of Night `n Day has been one of remarkable growth. In October last year, the company was ranked fourth nationally in the annual Deloitte Fast 50 companies around the country, with 952% growth. It was also Otago's fastest-growing retail or consumer products business.

For Mr Allison - winner of this year's Otago Southland branch of the Institute of Directors' aspiring director award - joining the business was coming ''full circle''. He worked at Night 'n Day when he was both at school and university.

Last week's speaker
Jean Lai
A quick sip to calm the nerves - although it does not look as though she needs it.

Jean gave a history starting with her GRandfather in the 1800s who was one of the first to have to pay a poll tax. He earned $100 for the years work.In the earlyn 1900s had a fish and chip shop oposite Knox Church.At 19 he was ready for marriage and was sent pictures for eligible girls froom China. He had to support his choosen one for 2 years (as a sort of engagement)
Jean can remember in the shop 1/6 (one shilling and sixpence -= 15 cents) and 3d ( 3d or 3pennys or 'thrippence' = 2cents) for a dozen oysters. They usedto kill 30 chooks and Jean would have to plunge them in boiling water and pluck them.
Jean was at high school when Patricia P taught there
in 1969 the Fish & Chip business morphed into August Moon Restaruant where 70 hour weeks were the norn.
Jean is fluent in Cantonese helped in future job offers.
She met David in 1976 na dcame to Dunedin to study pharmacy and she and David married in 1979 aafter he graduated. They have two daughter and one son who is in Melbourne. in 198 the restaruant was sold by her parents and Jean had a job at Otago Polytechnic, 9am till 2pm and was also undertaking interpretation for driver licence applicants.
Jean was teaching for 17 years.
In 1987  David and Jean purchased a partnership inNaughton's Pharmacy. After many years working they took a year off and travelled for a year. 9 months in Europe and then 3 months in Canada. One of the highlights was walking where Jesus walked in Israel. A week after they attended church in Jerusalem the church was bombed.
One year ago they travelled to India with Rajehsh and the group and would really love to serve on the Mercy Ship which they hoped to do soon.

Autumn is coming
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
   Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
   With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
   And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
      To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
   With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
      For summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cellst here
