There was no auction this week
Murray did the honours on behalf of Piet who was unable to attend.
He tossed well and Brigetta won the Red Knot.

Thort 4 the Week
"Every life is a story - make yours a a best seller."
Via Pres Sue

Sergeant's Session
Bob S took us on a journey about Rotary which we all paid for.  As Dave H aways says we don't know enough about OUR organisation.

Eleanor's youngest moved to Takaka Medical Centre and Sam in Palmerston North has just purchased a kit set house. Eleanor is a bit worried about it as he doesn't know how to hold a hammer.
Her youngest grandchild (5yrs old) has gone on holiday - with his new kitten.

For the Irish only.

Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an
important meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up to
heaven he said, 'Lord take pity on me. If you find me a parking
place I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish Whiskey!'
Miraculously, a parking place appeared.
Paddy looked up again and said, 'Never mind, I found one.'

LAST WEEK'S SPEAKER

Dr Chris Jackson
Dr Chris is the Consultant Medical Oncologist in the Oncology Department at Dunedin Hospital. He also spends 1/2  day at Mercy Hospital. He is married to Rachel and they have 3 children aged between 7 and 12. Chris was educated at Waitaki Boys and after graduating from Otago University spent a period at the Royal Marsden a hospital in London specialising in the treatment of cancer. Chris was appointed medical director of the Cancer Society in 2015. Chris's wife used to work for Andrew H.
Being of service to other people is important to him.
Chris provided an extremely detailed description of the issues faced with the research and treatment of cancer.
He provided a figure of 1 in 3 die of cancer. This has overtaken heart disease as the primary killer and lung cancer is the most common. It is a fact that the coronary care unit at the DHB is getting smaller.
There are 200 types of cancer. The chances of care are also improving. An interesting fact is that we are the 3rd most obese in the world after Mexico and the USA.
There are new development/frontiers and new drugs some of which are extremely expensive and are not funded by Pharmac.
As a side note, he mentioned that he is shouting his wife a conolonal rectal examination for her 50th birthday.
He described a number of new drugs and how they worked.
Which the bE will not try to repeat other than to say you should have been there to hear Chris who was a very relaxed and informative speaker.

Dictionaries in Schools
Derek K presenting a dictionary to one of the many lucky children at Brockville last month.

And here they all are - well done to us in continuing this very worthwhile community project.
Thanks to Bob S for the photos
This is a letter from Hiroshima to the NZ contact and then to me;

Hi Graham,

Nassrine replied to the latest update from Alan that I passed on to her:

She wrote, "they look really healthy and upbeat! Am so happy to see them thriving in NZ….

At this stage this information is sufficient, we shall put (it) online shortly.  The only requirement really is a 6-monthly report/update from our partners, and of course when there is something really important to share with the worldwide GLH community.

Look forward to seeing them grow tall and strong!"
Regards
Nassrine
