Sergeant's Session
David Macl provided a very interesting set of questions such as "what is a group of crows called - A murder of crows'that had many guessing.

Many thanks to Heather who took the notes and did the main setup for this bulletin.

  • President Sue reminded us about the Book Sale help that is required on Friday 9th June. Packing the boxes - not heavy lifting. Truck trolleys will be used to take the boxes down to the Atheneum basement.
  • President Sue reminded us about the Ten Pin Bowling next Tuesday 12th and then over to Cableways for dinner.  Family members welcome. Usual attendance proccedure.
  • 26th June we are doing a Vocational Visit to GCA Legal and dinner will be provided by guess who - so bring your own serviette.
  • 19th June we have a Red Cross worker disgussing issues of resettlement for refugees in Dunedin. This will be an exceptional talk and all members and families are encouraged to attend.
  • Change Over is scheduled for the 3rd July. Bit of a bugger - i will miss it as i will be in Canada basking in the afterglow euphoria of the RI Convention.

LAST WEEK'S SPEAKER
ROBIN BATES
Robin Bates gave us a most informative address about his job.
His business is called RPB Law.
It is a Warrant to do Prosecutions.
There are four prosecutors in Dunedin and they handle 250 cases per year. Their area is Palmerston to the north, Clinton to the South and Cromwell to the West.
They work with the Police but are not employed by them. Their work is reviewed every 4/5 years.
Average trial is 3-4 days with 100 cases waiting to be heard.

They are paid $30m for all businesses throughout the country and this is divided up as on the number and type of cases.
This is a regular cash flow as crime happenings are similar each year.
For murder trials there is the Casino type Calculator.
255 points for Murder, 1 point for an appeal.
Calculations take into consideration how long a case has been in the system.
Dunedin is a smaller area than many others in NZ and so it is not as bad. Police able to keep an eye on drug problems easier.
Historic Sex charges should be a deterrent but they aren't.
Thursday to Sunday is when most domestic violence takes place.  Alcohol is related to 98% of the cases.
When cases are given too much publicity Judge can order that the trial is transferred to Christchurch at a huge cost re accommodation, travel etc.
When cases are given too much publicity a judge can order that the trial is transferred to Christchurch at a huge cost of course as it includes all travel and accommodation.
Julia's What's New

I have to admit this was sprung on me at short notice, so I haven't had a chance to make any interesting stories up! Life has been fairly routine of late (although as far as I'm concerned that's not a bad thing).

My two girls are both doing well. Nina (8 year old) has just been bumped up to the top math class and her sister Monique (12 year old) has been selected for a special maths extension class. So I'm thrilled to have 2 budding mathematicians coming along. Monique is preparing for her grade 3 flute exam, and the most exciting thing that's happened recently was her 12th birthday last week. I (somewhat foolishly) took on the homemade birthday cake challenge.... halfway through I was cursing myself, but 7 hours later I had a masterpiece. (Tip for new players....never use Cadburys chocolate for moulding...)

As for me, I finished university exams a few weeks ago, and was pleased with how the results went. I went to a number of the events during Techweek which were quite interesting. We also got the opportunity to join the new Dunedin branch of NZ TechWomen, it's great to see groups like this kicking off in Dunedin.

I'm now working on the Rotary conference website as a team project, which is a lot of fun. It's been very heartening to see that I can actually keep up with the young ones in the tech training field, because I have certainly had my self-doubts along the way. Turns out you can teach a (semi) old dog new tricks!

And we're all looking forward to a family trip to Queenstown in the coming school holidays 😊

With what is above Julia you don't need time -great What's New.
