Club Notices

We welcomed Julie, a rotarian from Arizona and returning member Randall to the meeting on Tuesday.

The last weekend of the book sale wasn't as busy as expected, probably due to students still doing orientation stuff. Still an overall great success and something to plan for next year!

Books to Vanuatu

Diana Watson, a friend of Sue’s, is a volunteer midwife from Dunedin and is now working for Troppodoc in Vanuatu. Diana is hoping to open a children’s library in one of the remote villages on Malakula Island. Sue has collected  left over children’s books from the book sale and will help Diana get them to the village. This may be an ongoing relationship we can develop with the village, by donating our old children’s books from any future book sales.

Visitor from Arizona

Last Tuesday we had a visitor from Arizona. Julie Harden (Pictured above with Sue). Julie is a registered nurse and was waiting to join a cruise ship on Saturday at Port Chalmers, as medical staff. In good ‘tourist guide’ style, Sue offered to show her around Dunedin. From Signal Hill to St Clair with many spots in between, these two struck up a good Rotary friendship. Julie even took a sample of St Clair sand to give to her husband, John on her return home.

President Elect Training

Here are a couple of pic's of our President Elect at the training in Auckland. Above is Sue with AG Clair Ramsay. and below is Sue with PDG Karen Purdue.

Blast from the Past

Here is picture from a recent past member sent to Graham Spence. He wanted to share (as a reminder for 'older' members) of the past member inductions.

Those pictured fron the left; David Humphrey, President Brien Early, Mazi Gimmer and Don Kindley (ex Don Kindley Real Estate),

The days when we met at the Savoy Restaurant.

Please note white(ish) shirts and TIES!!!

Club and Committees night summary

Last Tuesday was a committees discussion night with some great ideas put out there. Below is the summary with questions for everyone to think about.

Membership

A few new members joining and thinking about joining at the moment including Randall, Beth Stitley, Richard Bourne and Glen & Michelle from Speedprint.

Who Haven't we asked who could be interested in joining?
A speaker we had, Chris Stains has joined the Lions after they asked him after he presented to them. Perhaps something we can collectively think about for the future.

What positions in the community could be filled by our members to help promote rotary?

It was suggested that we could all up-skill in Rotary knowledge. Perhaps have an experienced speaker for this.

We could have a vocational list so we can target specific people with good skills for the club.

We should make new people welcome and make sure they have fun. Also there could be work done on the mentoring of new members.

PR

Link to 'In Gear' on Bulletin.

There was some discussion on the 'In Gear' itself.
Everyone agreed that the quality and production of the magazine was excellent.
Suggestions that a more regular, bite sized version could be an option. Maybe every month with bullet points.

It was suggested that we do more about contacting the newspapers when we have events to try and publicise them more.

Projects

There could be opportunities for events around the time of the Lions tour in June.

If anyone can think of places which may need the left over books that would be fantastic. The Vanuatu Library is a great one mentioned earlier in the bulletin.

There were many ideas around tourism in Dunedin for events and publicity, lets embrace tourism!

The dictionaries in schools project previously run by Allan Crawford has now been taken over by Bob Smith and will take place March/April this year.

Bob Clark has taken over the apples for schools project which will be April/May this year

Other dates to remember:

Child Cancer Foundation - Collection on 17th March

Otago Rally - Collection 8th April

Book Sale - Move and store books on 10 June

End Polio Now - October sometime

Youth

We are looking for judges for the speech competition on 21 March.

Still working on pamphlets for John McGlashan.

Rotaract had 32 members for their first meeting this year!

Foundation

Andrew Meek told us about the Bequest Society and how as Rotarians we can leave our legacy by leaving unwanted inheritance to the permanent fund.
