There will be no Rotary on 13th June as the British Lions will be playing the Highlanders in Dunedin that evening.

Bob Smith is recovering from an angina attack, he is on drug therapy and the treadmill and will hopefully be home by now. It was great to see Penny at the meeting last week and get the update on Bob.

We are on the lookout for an HGV Licensed driver to help move the books to the Regent book sale on Saturday 3rd June. Only driving needed, they have people to move the books.

We will be hearing about the Hiroshima Tree peace Project this week as well as having some Dunedin North members visiting for the meeting.

Last Tuesday's Speaker

Last week we had award-wining author Lynley Hood as the guest speaker. She is pictured above with a VIZstick, one of the visual aids she spoke to us about.

Lynley brought along some of her books to, in her own words 'Prove she is a writer'. Lynley told us the story of her deteriorating eyesight and difficulties this brought as a writer and copywriter. 'Writers never retire'. Lynley could still think and put words together but a huge part of her factual writing relied on thorough research which is where the major difficulty comes in with deteriorating eyesight.

Lynley soon found out that there was a lack of support for the visually impaired in New Zealand. She publicised the problems through various media and also started VICTA (Visual Impairment Charitable Trust). Click on logo below to go to their website.

Part of what VICTA do is development of visual aids including the VIZstick (pictured with Lynley), a lightweight, folding, carbon fibre walking stick which gives 360 degree visibility in all weather and VIZbands, high visibility wrist bands. The wrist bands were so popular that they are now used as bike and road safety products.
