Last week's speaker
Graham Crombie

Last week we had Graham Crombie of Innovatio LTD talk to us about ‘Life as a Professional Governor’ A view from Dunedin.
Graham started by telling us about himself personally. He is a proud Grandfather, born and bred Dunedin man. He is a Chartered Accountant and spent 35 years in the accounting profession specializing in Audit, Consultancy and insolvency.
Graham works for himself now in governance and has several independent Directorships. He got into governance through school boards and the like. He got on to boards of Institute CA, Southern Health and Otago Polytech. Grahams main interest and tagline is;
‘Why do clever people struggle to work together?’
He has made it his mission and role to help solve this issue for the companies he works for which include:
Surf Life Saving, Action Engineering, Forsyth Barr, WK (Small Blenheim based accounting firm), Commerce Commission, Southern District Health board, Dunedin City Holdings Ltd, Otago Museum, TANZ E Campus, South Island Alliance and NZGL.
Graham touched on a few ‘Reflections on Governance issues’ first of which was ‘Technology’ and how it can help in business. The first example he gave for this was drones in Surf Life Saving which can take life belts out to people struggling in the water. There is also a ‘Rip App’ which people can use to identify rips in the water before they go in.
Technology also plays a huge role in the Health sector and has a massive impact in the planning for the new Dunedin hospital. Graham pointed out to us that because of developments in technology we actually have to plan and build a hospital which will still be relevant in 2045. An example of a specific technological improvement is the use of video call GP’s and Doctors, and even avatar doctors.
Technology has also drastically affected the financial and business world. With online banking and accounting, companies are able to share their information immediately with the banks and credit firms which means companies can compare their performance with like businesses and it will hopefully reduce bad debt.
Another governance issue is ‘Collaboration’. Graham stressed the need for collaboration in all areas including your own people and your customers. Companies also need to have an aspirational goal. Don’t settle for mediocrity, strive to be the best and keep pushing.
Graham concluded the formal part of the talk with the question
‘So you want to be a Governor? Why?’

The Annual Duck Race
This is a note sent to Claire from Dunedin East requesting some publicity for the Duck Race

"Hello Claire,

As you might already know, I am working with John Nelson from the Rotary Club of Dunedin East through my Red Cross role, to help organize the Duck Race.

It would really help if Rotarians who have school connections can encourage the schools to take part in the event. Maybe clubs can put it in their notices for the upcoming meetings  It has no cost at all!
All they have to do is decorate the duck we give them and just show up!

Attached is the sign up form for schools. For the corporate sign up forms please contact John Nelson.

Kind regards,
Sakhr"

Remember the
POLIO PLUS RAFFLE
Each ticket costs $2 and will be drawn on World Polio Day 24th October.
For every $1 we raise the Bill Gates Foundation match it with $2. This is an easy way to raise money for the ‘End Polio Now’ project.

Bill Gates said in his speech at the 2017 Rotary convention. “The progress on polio (eradication) is a reminder of what people can accomplish when they are bold, determined, and willing to work together.”
